What Is Homeowners Insurance?
Homeowners insurance is a bundled contract that covers four distinct things under one policy: the structure of your home, your personal belongings, your liability to other people, and temporary housing if the home becomes unlivable. You pay a monthly or annual premium, and the insurer agrees to pay for covered losses up to the limits in your policy.
If you have a mortgage, your lender requires coverage at least equal to the loan balance. Even without a mortgage, it's one of the few products that protects both your single largest asset and your net worth from a lawsuit at the same time.
